Learn about our nationally recognized program
Whatever your internal medicine career goals, Mount Auburn Hospital provides the clinical education and professional support to help you achieve them. A teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School (HMS), Mount Auburn’s Internal Medicine Residency Program blends the personalized, collegial atmosphere of a community hospital with the advanced resources of a major academic center.
At Mount Auburn, you’ll gain exposure to a wide variety of inpatient and outpatient medical cases in clinic, on the wards, and in the intensive care unit — all while building meaningful relationships with the colleagues, attendings, and staff in our close-knit community. With flexible elective time, you can focus on your specific interests through clinical experiences or scholarly activities here, throughout the city, in another state, or even abroad. And because our residents are clinical fellows in medicine at HMS, you’ll have access to Harvard’s extensive resources for cutting-edge research and other academic pursuits. We support categorical residents with our Pathway System, which offers flexibility to tailor training to your aspirations.
A top-tier community hospital located in beautiful Cambridge, MA, we not only have stellar primary care sites and general wards, but also have a stroke center, an advanced cardiac care center, and a 24/7 staffed MICU. We also have ancillary teams who handle tasks like blood draws and patient transport, allowing you to focus on patient care and education.
Our Internal Medicine Residency Program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
Get the experience, training, and knowledge you need to become a board-certified doctor of internal medicine or pursue medical subspecialties. Residents from our categorical program go on to train in fellowship programs or practice medicine as hospitalists or primary care physicians. Our categorical residents choose which pathway best fits their interests and career goals.
You’ll work with your faculty advisor to customize your residency experience. Whether you want to practice primary care, become a hospitalist, or pursue a subspecialty fellowship, we give you attention, instruction, and guidance through our rigorous training pathways.
Gain a solid foundation for specialty training during the one-year preliminary program. You’ll benefit from the same postgraduate year one (PGY-1) learning experiences as the interns in the categorical program, with one exception — as a preliminary student, you won’t have a panel of patients in continuity clinic. You will, however, provide urgent care in our Primary Care Center up to ten afternoons a year to experience an aspect of outpatient general internal medicine while on your ambulatory weeks.
Our preliminary program residents go on to train in anesthesiology, dermatology, neurology, radiation oncology, radiology and physical medicine and rehabilitation.
Get the educational experience that fits your career goals with a categorical program that offers ample, flexible elective time. You’ll have the freedom to spend seven of your 36 months of residency pursuing your passions — whether that’s conducting research or completing rotations in specific specialties. Spend your elective time at Mount Auburn, expand to another Harvard Medical School affiliate, or spend time at another national or international training site.
At Mount Auburn Hospital, you’ll work directly with attending physicians — all of whom have teaching appointments at Harvard Medical School and a strong commitment to educating the next generation of physicians and healthcare leaders. They’ll guide you through rotations, support your scholarly activity and act as mentors and career advisors.

Dive deeper into a specific area of interest and get valuable experience for your curriculum vitae during your scholarly project. With program support, you’ll create a proposal, conduct research (leveraging all the resources available at Harvard University) and showcase your findings at medical grand rounds during your third year. Scholarly activity is a key component of our program, and whether you’ve published before or not, we integrate this into your training.
