Pulmonary Rehabilitation Benefits

When you commit to your pulmonary rehabilitation program, you may:

What To Expect During Lung Rehabilitation

Your care team will use information about your health to develop a rehabilitation plan tailored to your needs and goals. Throughout the program, you’ll get one-on-one support from a respiratory therapist and enjoy camaraderie with your peers.

Your First Visit

During your first appointment with us, you’ll meet with a respiratory therapist to discuss your medical history and perform exercise and breathing tests. A pulmonologist (lung doctor) will conduct a detailed physical exam and ask how your symptoms limit your activities.

Exercise: Your Program's Foundation

Even if you have advanced lung disease, physical activity will benefit you. That’s why each pulmonary rehabilitation session includes exercise to strengthen your legs, arms, heart or breathing muscles. We’ll also recommend individualized home exercises so you can continue progress on your own.

Respiratory Education

During educational sessions, you’ll:

  • Explore evidence-based ways to get healthier and minimize your symptoms.
  • Discover how to work with your doctor to make informed decisions about your medical needs.
  • Learn how to make breathing easier by using inhalers and oxygen and by conserving energy.
Program Length

You’ll likely participate in rehabilitation two to three times per week for a total of 16 to 24 sessions.

Insurance Coverage

Medicare and most private insurers cover pulmonary rehabilitation for people who:

  • We determine need the program.
  • Aren’t smoking or are trying to quit.
