Midwifery Care

Offering you a full range of pregnancy and birth options

Midwifery Care Services

The Midwives at Mount Auburn (MaMA) Hospital offer compassionate, evidence-based reproductive and sexual health care. From adolescence through menopause, we serve your needs from family planning, routine tests and screenings to urgent gynecologic concerns or a pregnancy journey. We proudly offer full scope reproductive services in a supportive and affirming environment.

At Mount Auburn Hospital's Bain Birthing Center, the midwifery team believes no two births are the same. We offer individualized care and supportive coping strategies during labors, inductions, and cesarean births.

As the largest midwifery practice in eastern Massachusetts, we attend over half of Mount Auburn Hospital's births per year. We work alongside our OB/GYN physician colleagues to optimize outcomes together.

Our Nurse-Midwives

Partnering for Your Health

When you choose a MaMA midwife for your reproductive or pregnancy care, you gain a provider who focuses on empowering you to actively participate in your health care. Count on your CNM to listen, learn about and value your specific needs, beliefs and preferences. Trust her to provide the information and support you need to make decisions about your care. Each CNM strives to provide anti-racist, trauma-informed, and gender-affirming care, and is open to feedback on how to best take care of you and your family.

As a teaching hospital, Mount Auburn Hospital supports student midwives in their clinical education, and we're appreciative of our clients who opt into student involvement in their care.

Hospital Birth with a Certified Nurse-Midwife

Find a maternity provider who supports and facilitates your wishes for low-intervention hospital birth at Mount Auburn Hospital. With MaMA, you always get the level of care you need. Enjoy the benefits of working with midwives who have access to the resources, support and expertise of a Harvard-affiliated community hospital. If you require specialized or advanced care, your midwife will work closely with physicians at Mount Auburn Hospital.
Options for Pain Relief

Partner with your midwife to decide which labor pain relief techniques are right for you. Your midwife will tell you about a wide range pharmacological and non-pharmacological options, and support whichever method or methods you choose. We have tubs and showers for hydrotherapy during labor, and are proud to offer water birth in a birthing tub on our labor and delivery unit.

Vaginal Birth after Cesarean (VBAC)

Expect exceptional support for vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC) when you choose to deliver at Bain Birthing Center with MaMA. Your midwife will help you determine whether VBAC is safe for you and your baby. You’ll be encouraged by our success rates: 80 percent of women who choose a VBAC with a midwife at Bain Birthing Center successfully deliver vaginally.

Menopause Management

When you need relief from common symptoms of menopause, turn to the Midwives at Mount Auburn. We’ll work with you to find the best conventional treatments and integrative medicine techniques to help you transition comfortably.
