More Expectant Moms Than Ever Are Choosing Midwives to Deliver Their Babies
1 in 10 Women Now Choose Midwife Services
Cambridge, Mass.– 42-year-old Emily Dale and her partner were about to start expensive IVF treatments when they discovered she was pregnant naturally. Having grown up in and around Cambridge, she knew she wanted to deliver at Mount Auburn Hospital. She also knew she wanted a personalized and special experience, so she chose Mount Auburn’s Midwifery Program to take care of her before, during, and after she gave birth.
“I had already been seeing Julia since I was 25 years old,” said Dale, referring to Julia Dickinson, RN, CNM, now the director of the Midwife Program. “She was always one step ahead of me to give me the resources to figure out my path to motherhood. She gave me a lot of support and insight. I felt like the care, the knowledge, the compassion I had experienced with her was the same with all the other midwives.”
The Midwifery Program at Mount Auburn Hospital is the largest midwife practice in the state, with 30 certified nurse-midwives. “Our midwifery staff, known as MaMA – for Midwives at Mount Auburn – is composed of dedicated clinicians who work compassionately with our patients,” said Dickinson. “We advise them and give them options for their care so they can make the right decision for them. I am not surprised that more and more women are choosing midwives to help them deliver their babies.”
Dale wanted to deliver her baby in a bathtub in her delivery room. That was an option, but, ultimately, she gave birth to little Florence, now 9 weeks old, in bed without any pain meds whatsoever. “They were giving me options while encouraging me. I needed them to be very intentional and compassionate to help me make the right decisions and they did.”
Midwifery at MAH offers services for women of all ages and all stages of life, from pre-conception, to pregnancy and birth care, to post-partum support, to menopause.
