Mount Auburn Hospital Expands Erickson Family Lung Center

The Newly Renovated Space Will Offer Multi-disciplinary Lung Care Services in One Location

Cambridge, Mass. – As part of its commitment to provide exceptional patient-centered care in the community, Mount Auburn Hospital recently opened an expanded Erickson Family Lung Center. The new facility provides state-of-the-art, multi-disciplinary care for those impacted by lung disease. According to the American Cancer Society, lung cancer is the second most common cancer in both men and women in the United States and is the leading cause of cancer death.

Mount Auburn is a leader in pulmonary services, having achieved the Pulmonary Excellence Award from Healthgrades for the past three years, one of only five hospitals in Massachusetts to do so. The expansion of the Erickson Family Lung Center will help bring together care team members in one location to support the needs of our patients. Previously, the services delivered by the center were located in two locations; by bringing the center’s providers into one location, patients will be able to access care across specialties more conveniently.

The expanded center will house additional doctors, as well as a lung disease nurse practitioner and a nurse navigator, who helps patients and their families navigate their way through the treatment process. The center is nearly double the size of the old building and includes eight examination rooms, as well as office and conference space.

The newly expanded and renovated space was made possible by a very significant donation from Ruth Erickson and her husband Paul Goularte, which was given in memory of Ruth Erickson’s parents and brother, each of whom received outstanding care from clinicians at the lung center.

“The newly expanded Erickson Family Lung Center provides world-class lung care and enhanced services for our patients in the community,” said Ed Huang, MD, interim president of Mount Auburn Hospital. “We are grateful to Ruth and Paul for their considerable support of this center, where our clinicians are delivering extraordinary care every day.”

“We feel very fortunate to be able to offer this new space for the care and comfort of our patients,” said Carey Thomson, MD, MPH, Chair of the Department of Medicine, and Director of the Multidisciplinary Thoracic Oncology and Lung Nodule Program. “It allows us to expand our pulmonary practice so that we can provide care to patients experiencing different issues, by adding a new lung cancer and lung disease nurse practitioner, and the addition of four new doctors. The nurse navigator role is supported by a separate generous donation from Gloria and Anthony C. Simboli for whom the new conference room will be named. We are excited to offer a wider range of medical services to our patients.”
