Dickinson Has Been Supporting Patients as a Midwife at the Hospital for 14 Years

Cambridge, Mass. – Julia Dickinson, RN, CNM, has been appointed director of Midwifery at Mount Auburn Hospital where she has supported and cared for patients as a midwife since 2008. Mount Auburn Hospital has the largest midwife practice in the state, with 30 certified nurse-midwives.

“We are pleased to announce Julia Dickinson as our new director of Midwifery,” said Chad Wable, president of Mount Auburn Hospital. “Julia’s passion for midwifery is a reflection of her clear commitment to serve her patients and we are fortunate to have her in this role.”

In her time at Mount Auburn, Dickinson has held a variety of positions. Starting her career at the Charles River Community Health Center, affiliated with Mount Auburn, Dickinson focused on working with the Latina immigrant population. Seven years later, Dickinson was promoted to assistant director of Midwifery at Mount Auburn, where she took on an administrative role in addition to her midwife practice. In 2019, she was promoted to associate director of Midwifery.

“I am honored to be named director of Midwifery at Mount Auburn Hospital,” said Dickinson. “Our midwifery staff, known as MaMA -- for Midwives at Mount Auburn -- is composed of dedicated clinicians who work compassionately with our patients. I have been proud to work alongside them through the years and hope to lead them with the same understanding and professionalism as they show their patients.”

Dickinson graduated from the Yale University School of Nursing, where she received a master’s degree in nurse-midwifery. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree, cum laude, from the University of Notre Dame. In 2007, she received full funding for a research project on breastfeeding in Ethiopia, taught neonatal resuscitation in Kenya, and provided gynecologic care in the Dominican Republic. In 2018, she received a Harvard Medical School faculty appointment as a teaching associate in Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Biology.

“I have had the pleasure of working with Julia for many years. Her knowledge, compassion, her experience, and her dedication make her the perfect choice for this position,” said Ed Huang, MD, Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology at MAH and assistant professor at Harvard Medical School. “I also want to express my gratitude to Margi Coggins who was director for eight years.”

Midwifery at MAH offers services for women of all ages and all stages of life, from pre-conception, to pregnancy and birth care, to post-partum support, to menopause.
