Should I Consider a Fertility Evaluation?

You or your healthcare provider may consider a fertility evaluation if:

  • You haven’t become pregnant after one year of regular sexual intercourse without birth control (or after six months if you’re a woman over 35)
  • You are >/= to 40 years old and are trying to become pregnant
  • You have irregular or painful periods
  • You or your partner has a known fertility condition

Fertility Evaluation: What To Expect

When you visit your primary care provider or gynecology provider for a fertility evaluation, they will want to talk with you about you and your partner's medical and sexual histories. They will also recommend doing a physical exam which will likely include a pelvic exam. Your provider may recommend follow-up tests, such as a blood test to examine hormone levels, a semen analysis or imaging tests to look at your reproductive organs.

Then, you’ll work together to develop a plan that fits you, your condition, and your goals and beliefs. We’ll start with the least invasive options that may work for you, such as fertility drugs.
