Program Director, Caitlin Connolly, MD

As one of the oldest hospitals in the nation and the first hospital in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Mount Auburn sits alongside the banks of the Charles River just a short walk from Harvard Square and minutes from downtown Boston. Our ideal location and affiliation with Harvard Medical School provides our residents with outstanding educational and social opportunities. Whether it’s attending a specialty course at the medical school, rotating at other Harvard affiliated hospitals or cheering from the bleachers at Fenway, our residents graduate as exceptional radiologists and develop lifelong bonds with their colleagues and the Department.

Rich in history, the Radiology Residency Program at Mount Auburn has educated future radiologists since 1947. Founded by renowned radiologist Dr. Richard Schatzki, the Department has long been focused on simultaneously setting the standard for excellence in patient care and academic achievement. While at Mount Auburn, Dr. Schatzki described many radiologic signs that are now considered fundamental to the practice of radiology. Dr. J. Pierre Sasson leads the Department as Chair and continues its dedication to resident education. Dr. Sasson is known for his dedication to teaching, having served as Program Director for 18 years before becoming Chair. Dr. Sasson was recognized for his efforts by being chosen as the recipient of the 2018 Leo A. Blacklow Teaching Award for excellence in medical student and resident education by the staff, residents, and medical students at Mount Auburn Hospital and Harvard Medical School.

As Radiology Residency Program Director, I am proud to work with our outstanding faculty in such a wonderful educational atmosphere. Our residents are taught by subspecialty trained faculty in a supportive environment that encourages professional and personal growth. 2.5 hours of daily dedicated conference time supplements teaching at the PACS workstation and in the interventional suite and exposes the residents to a high volume of cases with diverse pathology. We have found that our style of training builds confidence and fosters exceptional decision-making abilities in the post graduate years.

In addition, the absence of fellows allows our residents unique hands-on procedural experience. All residents participate in research, quality improvement projects, and teaching both medical students and fellow residents. The residency is also engaged in global outreach with opportunities to provide care to the underserved and disadvantaged. We offer mini fellowships in all subspecialties to our fourth-year residents, including a strong ESIR program and the opportunity to pursue a 16-month Nuclear Medicine subspecialty certificate concurrent with your diagnostic radiology training.

100% of our graduates pursue fellowship training and more than half end up in academia. We have a wonderful record of success on the Core and Certifying exams and outstanding fellowship placement. Our graduates maintain a connection to our program, frequently returning to teach and advise our residents.

Reading about Mount Auburn radiology cannot relay the sense of community, academic curiosity, professional and personal support, and camaraderie that our residents share.
